What Is a Downstem?

The downstem, sometimes called a bong stem, is the glass tube that runs from your bong’s joint down into the water. Your bowl sits in the top of the downstem, and smoke travels down through it and bubbles up through the water before reaching you.

Because it sits right in the water, the downstem has a big effect on how smooth your hits are.

Types of Downstems

Diffused Downstems

Diffused downstems have slits or holes at the bottom that break smoke into lots of small bubbles. More bubbles means more contact with the water, which cools and filters the smoke for a smoother hit. It’s one of the easiest ways to upgrade a basic bong.

Flush Mount Downstems

Flush mount downstems sit level with the top of your bong’s joint for a clean look and a secure fit. Most also include a diffused tip.

Metal Downstems

Finding the Right Downstem

Length: Downstems are measured in millimetres from the joint to the tip. The easiest way to find your size is to measure your old downstem. No old stem? Slide a straw or pencil into the joint until it almost touches the bottom of your bong, then measure. The tip should sit about a centimetre above the base so it stays underwater without touching the glass.

Joint size: Most bongs take a stem that accepts a 14mm bowl. Check the product details to make sure the downstem matches your bong’s joint.

Style: Go diffused for smoother hits, or flush mount for a cleaner look.

Fixed vs Removable Downstems

Some bongs have a fixed downstem that’s fused into the glass. Those can’t be swapped out, so if a fixed stem cracks, you’ll need a new bong. Most bongs with a ground glass joint use a removable downstem, which is easy to replace or upgrade.

Cleaning Your Downstem

Downstems collect resin fast since smoke passes straight through them. Soak yours in isopropyl alcohol with coarse salt or a bong cleaner, then use a pipe cleaner to clear the slits. A clean downstem pulls easier and tastes better.
